East Welsh and Scottish Railway

East Welsh and Scottish Railway Ltd EWS was one of the most reputed rail freight companies of the Britain. Initially the name of the company was north and south railways and its headquarters are situated at Doncaster, England. The main services which are provided by the company include bulk freight and intermodal logistics. It remained one of the most trusted operators of the Europe as it delivers most reliable and trusted services to the customers until June 2007 and after that it was acquired by Deutsche Bahn AG. This company was founded in the year 1996 by one of the most popular companies of the European continent the Wisconsin Central Ltd after the acquisition of the five major freight operating companies which were the result of the privatisation of the British rails.

An announcement was made on 28 June 2007 and it was publicised that all the share of the EWS will be acquired by Deutschen Bahn AG. The deal was signed for 300 million pounds at that point of time the company is having around 5000 employee and also had a 70% share in the European market. Initially it was decided that the brand name of the company will remain same as English, welsh and Scottish railway, but two years of the deal, i.e. in 2009 the name of the company was changed to the DB Schenker Rail (UK)

Trains of EWS

EWS had employed about 5800 people and on an average it carries around 100 million tons of cargo every year which makes it the largest freight operating company of the Britain. The fleet of the company is consisted of 250 class 66 diesel locomotives and also possessed class 59 and class 92 locomotives.

Services provided by the EWS

Concept of big freight railways was developed by the EWS. About 500 locomotives and around 8000 journeys in a week to the various destinations around the Europe makes it the largest operator of England. Following are the major sectors which are served by the operator:-

  1. Construction and waste industry- Company is strictly focused to serve the needs of the customers by providing them facility to transport the heavy building materials and the waste of the commercial companies and the local authorities.
  2. British industries- the company is also focused to serve the industries in the Britain by supplying them raw materials required by them to carry on the processes. The material mainly includes coal, metal and petroleum.
  3. Fright services to and from France- Company also focus on providing reliable and transparent services to the customers to and from France.

EWS company train

Internally known as CoT this was a special train of the company which was meant for the special purposes such as customer and staff tours, conferences etc. rather we can say that it was an on wheel office of the company where company can invite customers for conferences, parties, tours and other functions. This train was consisted if sleeper coach having 5 bedrooms, dining hall and bar.
